What to have ready
- Who is asking for the background check — an employer, a licensing board, an immigration attorney, a foreign government, an adoption agency
- The exact wording they used. “Police clearance”, “criminal record check” and “Identity History Summary” are not always the same request, and the difference between DOJ and FBI decides everything downstream
- Whether the result needs to go abroad, since that adds an authentication step
- Your deadline
If you are not sure which check you need
That is the most common reason people call, and it is worth settling before anyone is fingerprinted. Choosing the wrong process delays employment, licensing and immigration paperwork, and the fingerprints usually have to be taken again. If your fingerprints were rejected
Send or bring the rejection notice. What it says determines whether another electronic attempt makes sense or whether ink cards are the better route. A rejection does not automatically mean cards.
