FBI electronic fingerprint submission
Fingerprints captured electronically and transmitted to the FBI through an FBI-approved Channeler, with the Identity History Summary usually returned the same day. Providers, Channelers and the FBI are three separate parties — most fingerprinting providers are not Channelers, which is why your report arrives from a company rather than from the FBI.
FD-258 fingerprint cards
Ink cards rolled by hand, for applicants outside California or outside the United States, and for cases where electronic capture has failed. FBI electronic submission is less forgiving than California Live Scan, and cards sometimes succeed where a scanner will not.
California DOJ Live Scan
Where the requesting agency wants the state record rather than the federal one. Which of the two you need is not a preference — it depends entirely on who is asking.
